SME Med was created to support SMEs in the Mediterranean Basin.

Dear members of SME UNION and Colleagues from around the Mediterranean for the next few months I have been appointed to preside over the SME MED Working Group. As you are aware in 2006 SME UNION launched a SME MED Working Group. The objective of this Group was set up in an effort to address business issues common to Mediterranean entrepreneurs. Although up till now we had a slow start I am looking forward to put this ambitious objective into practice.
As Mediterranean countries we all hold our individual characteristics but then as one travels around the Basin one can easily recognize the a common culture, traditions, our cuisine, attitude and the deep blue sea that touches our shores. Historically our sea is more known for invasions and turmoil but nevertheless such situations did not stop the traders from our countries to seek new markets and opportunities beyond their shores and borders.
The effect of globalization has given Entrepreneurs opportunities to go further and explore markets very few SMEs would have dreamed possible. This enthusiasm though has decreased the importance of the Mediterranean as trade market. To overturn these turn of events initiatives commenced, chapters have been written and agreements have been signed ie: Barcelona Process 1995. EU Neighborhood Policy 2004, Mediterranean Union 2008 are all welcome news but still co-operation between all parties involved is slow. With 2009 European Year dedicated to Innovation and Creativity and 2010 Free trade commitment with Mediterranean Partner Countries just round the corner as a SME MED Working Group we have challenging year ahead.
I am looking forward to working with you for the benefit of SMEs in our countries.
